1 Corinthians 1 v 18 –25:
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to
us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: "I will
destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will
frustrate." Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the
philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For
since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God
was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who
believe. Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach
Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to
those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the
wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the
weakness of God is stronger than man's strength.
2 Corinthians 4 v 3 - 4:
And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. The
god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see
the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
John 8 v 21 - 24:
Once more Jesus said to them, "I am going away, and you will look for me, and
you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come." This made the Jews ask,
"Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, 'Where I go, you cannot come'?" But
he continued, "You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am
not of this world. I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not
believe that I am the one I claim to be, you will indeed die in your sins."
2 Thessalonians 1 v 7 - 8:
and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen
when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful
angels. He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of
our Lord Jesus.
2 Thessalonians 2 v 10 - 12:
And in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish
because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God
sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all
will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in
wickedness.
Mark 16 v 16:
Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe
will be condemned.
Matthew 26 v 59 - 68:
The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence
against Jesus so that they could put him to death. But they did not find any,
though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward and declared,
"This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in
three days.' " Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, "Are you not
going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against
you?" But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, "I charge you
under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God."
"Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. "But I say to all of you: In the future
you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and
coming on the clouds of heaven." Then the high priest tore his clothes and said,
"He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have
heard the blasphemy. What do you think?" "He is worthy of death," they answered.
Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him
and said, "Prophesy to us, Christ. Who hit you?"
Matthew 27 v 28 -31:
They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and then twisted together a
crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand and
knelt in front of him and mocked him. "Hail, king of the Jews!" they said. They
spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.
After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on
him. Then they led him away to crucify him.
Matthew 27 v 39 - 44:
Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, "You
who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself!
Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!" In the same way the chief
priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. "He saved others,"
they said, "but he can't save himself! He's the King of Israel! Let him come
down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God. Let God
rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, 'I am the Son of God.' " In the
same way the robbers who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
Mark 10 v 33 - 34:
"We are going up to Jerusalem," he said, "and the Son of Man will be betrayed to
the chief priests and teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and
will hand him over to the Gentiles, who will mock him and spit on him, flog him
and kill him. Three days later he will rise."
Mark 14 v 61 - 65:
But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him,
"Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?" "I am," said Jesus. "And you
will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming
on the clouds of heaven." The high priest tore his clothes. "Why do we need any
more witnesses?" he asked. "You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?"
They all condemned him as worthy of death. Then some began to spit at him; they
blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, "Prophesy!" And the
guards took him and beat him.
2 Peter 3 v 3 - 9:
First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come,
scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, "Where is this
'coming' he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has
since the beginning of creation." But they deliberately forget that long ago by
God's word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by
water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By
the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept
for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. But do not forget this
one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a
thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as
some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish,
but everyone to come to repentance.
2 Peter 1 v 16 - 21:
We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and
coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he
received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the
Majestic Glory, saying, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well
pleased." We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with
him on the sacred mountain. And we have the word of the prophets made more
certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a
dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. Above
all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the
prophet's own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of
man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
2 Timothy 4 v 1- 2:
The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and
follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come
through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot
iron.
Jude 1 v 4:
For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly
slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into
a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.
Titus 1 v 10 -16:
For there are many rebellious people, mere talkers and deceivers, especially
those of the circumcision group. They must be silenced, because they are ruining
whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach–and that for the
sake of dishonest gain. Even one of their own prophets has said, "Cretans are
always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons." This testimony is true. Therefore,
rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith and will pay no
attention to Jewish myths or to the commands of those who reject the truth. To
the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not
believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are
corrupted. They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are
detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.
2 Chronicles 36 v 15 - 16:
The LORD, the God of their fathers, sent word to them through his messengers
again and again, because he had pity on his people and on his dwelling place.
But they mocked God's messengers, despised his words and scoffed at his prophets
until the wrath of the LORD was aroused against his people and there was no
remedy.
Job 21 v 14 - 16:
Yet they say to God, 'Leave us alone! We have no desire to know your ways. Who
is the Almighty, that we should serve him? What would we gain by praying to
him?' But their prosperity is not in their own hands, so I stand aloof from the
counsel of the wicked.
Psalm 1 v 1:
Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in
the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers.
Psalm 42 v 3 - 6:
My tears have been my food day and night, while men say to me all day long,
"Where is your God?" These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used
to go with the multitude, leading the procession to the house of God, with
shouts of joy and thanksgiving among the festive throng. Why are you downcast, O
my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise
him, my Savior and my God.
Psalm 73 v 11:
They say, "How can God know? Does the Most High have knowledge?"
Psalm 78 v 19 - 31:
They spoke against God, saying, "Can God spread a table in the desert? When he
struck the rock, water gushed out, and streams flowed abundantly. But can he
also give us food? Can he supply meat for his people?" When the LORD heard them,
he was very angry; his fire broke out against Jacob, and his wrath rose against
Israel, for they did not believe in God or trust in his deliverance. Yet he gave
a command to the skies above and opened the doors of the heavens; he rained down
manna for the people to eat, he gave them the grain of heaven. Men ate the bread
of angels; he sent them all the food they could eat. He let loose the east wind
from the heavens and led forth the south wind by his power. He rained meat down
on them like dust, flying birds like sand on the seashore. He made them come
down inside their camp, all around their tents. They ate till they had more than
enough, for he had given them what they craved. But before they turned from the
food they craved, even while it was still in their mouths, God's anger rose
against them; he put to death the sturdiest among them, cutting down the young
men of Israel.
Psalm 107 v 1- 11:
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; of the LORD say this- those he redeemed
from the hand of the foe, those he gathered from the lands, from east and west,
from north and south. Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no way to a
city where they could settle. They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives
ebbed away. Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered
them from their distress. He led them by a straight way to a city where they
could settle. Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his
wonderful deeds for men, for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with
good things. Some sat in darkness and the deepest gloom, prisoners suffering in
iron chains, for they had rebelled against the words of God and despised the
counsel of the Most High.
Proverbs 1 v 22:
"How long will you simple ones love your simple ways? How long will mockers
delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge?
Proverbs 3 v 33 -34:
He mocks proud mockers but gives grace to the humble. The wise inherit honor,
but fools he holds up to shame.
Proverbs 9 v 10 - 12:
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One
is understanding. For through me your days will be many, and years will be added
to your life. If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you; if you are a mocker,
you alone will suffer."
Proverbs 21 v 11:
When a mocker is punished, the simple gain wisdom; when a wise man is
instructed, he gets knowledge.
Proverbs 21 v 24:
The proud and arrogant man-"Mocker" is his name; he behaves with overweening
pride.
Proverbs 22 v 10:
Drive out the mocker, and out goes strife; quarrels and insults are ended.
Proverbs 24 v 9:
The schemes of folly are sin, and men detest a mocker.
Isaiah 5 v 18 - 19:
Woe to those who draw sin along with cords of deceit, and wickedness as with
cart ropes, to those who say, "Let God hurry, let him hasten his work so we may
see it. Let it approach, let the plan of the Holy One of Israel come, so we may
know it."
Isaiah 5 v 25 - 26:
Therefore, as tongues of fire lick up straw and as dry grass sinks down in the
flames, so their roots will decay and their flowers blow away like dust; for
they have rejected the law of the LORD Almighty and spurned the word of the Holy
One of Israel. Therefore the LORD'S anger burns against his people; his hand is
raised and he strikes them down. The mountains shake, and the dead bodies are
like refuse in the streets. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his
hand is still upraised.
Isaiah 29 v 20:
The ruthless will vanish, the mockers will disappear, and all who have an eye
for evil will be cut down.
Isaiah 57 v 4:
Whom are you mocking? At whom do you sneer and stick out your tongue? Are you
not a brood of rebels, the offspring of liars?
Jeremiah 17 v 15:
They keep saying to me, "Where is the word of the LORD? Let it now be
fulfilled!"
Jeremiah 43 v 1 - 3:
When Jeremiah finished telling the people all the words of the LORD their
God-everything the LORD had sent him to tell them- Azariah son of Hoshaiah and
Johanan son of Kareah and all the arrogant men said to Jeremiah, "You are lying!
The LORD our God has not sent you to say, 'You must not go to Egypt to settle
there.'
Ezekiel 8 v 12:
He said to me, "Son of man, have you seen what the elders of the house of Israel
are doing in the darkness, each at the shrine of his own idol? They say, 'The
LORD does not see us; the LORD has forsaken the land.' "
Ezekiel 9 v 9:
He answered me, "The sin of the house of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great;
the land is full of bloodshed and the city is full of injustice. They say, 'The
LORD has forsaken the land; the LORD does not see.'
Ezekiel 11 v 2:
The LORD said to me, "Son of man, these are the men who are plotting evil and
giving wicked advice in this city.
Ezekiel 12 v 22 - 25:
"Son of man, what is this proverb you have in the land of Israel: 'The days go
by and every vision comes to nothing'? Say to them, 'This is what the Sovereign
LORD says: I am going to put an end to this proverb, and they will no longer
quote it in Israel.' Say to them, 'The days are near when every vision will be
fulfilled. For there will be no more false visions or flattering divinations
among the people of Israel. But I the LORD will speak what I will, and it shall
be fulfilled without delay. For in your days, you rebellious house, I will
fulfill whatever I say, declares the Sovereign LORD.' "
Ezekiel 33 v 18 - 20:
If a righteous man turns from his righteousness and does evil, he will die for
it. And if a wicked man turns away from his wickedness and does what is just and
right, he will live by doing so. Yet, O house of Israel, you say, 'The way of
the Lord is not just.' But I will judge each of you according to his own ways."
Matthew 12 v 22 - 28:
Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus
healed him, so that he could both talk and see. All the people were astonished
and said, "Could this be the Son of David?" But when the Pharisees heard this,
they said, "It is only by Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that this fellow
drives out demons." Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, "Every kingdom
divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided
against itself will not stand. If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against
himself. How then can his kingdom stand? And if I drive out demons by Beelzebub,
by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. But if
I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon
you.
Acts 2 v 1 - 24:
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly a
sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole
house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that
separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the
Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Now
there were staying in Jerusalem Godfearing Jews from every nation under heaven.
When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each
one heard them speaking in his own language. Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are
not all these men who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us
hears them in his own native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents
of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia,
Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and
converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs–we hear them declaring the wonders of
God in our own tongues!" Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What
does this mean?" Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too
much wine." Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed
the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain
this to you; listen carefully to what I say. These men are not drunk, as you
suppose. It's only nine in the morning! No, this is what was spoken by the
prophet Joel: " 'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all
people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will
pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. I will show wonders in
the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of
smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the
coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. And everyone who calls on the
name of the Lord will be saved.' "Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of
Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs,
which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. This man was handed
over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of
wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. But God raised him
from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible
for death to keep its hold on him.
Acts 13 v 44 - 48:
On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord.
When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and talked
abusively against what Paul was saying. Then Paul and Barnabas answered them
boldly: "We had to speak the word of God to you first. Since you reject it and
do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles.
For this is what the Lord has commanded us: " 'I have made you a light for the
Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.'" When the
Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord; and all
who were appointed for eternal life believed.
Acts 17 v 18 - 21:
A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to dispute with him. Some of
them asked, "What is this babbler trying to say?" Others remarked, "He seems to
be advocating foreign gods." They said this because Paul was preaching the good
news about Jesus and the resurrection. Then they took him and brought him to a
meeting of the Areopagus, where they said to him, "May we know what this new
teaching is that you are presenting? You are bringing some strange ideas to our
ears, and we want to know what they mean." (All the Athenians and the foreigners
who lived there spent their time doing nothing but talking about and listening
to the latest ideas.)
Acts 17 v 32:
When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some of them sneered, but
others said, "We want to hear you again on this subject."
Hebrews 10 29 - 31:
How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has
trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood
of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?
For we know him who said, "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," and again, "The
Lord will judge his people." It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of
the living God.
